Would you smoke a tomato?

I love Google.

I was attempting to do a little research after a pretty kick-ass evening of shoe shopping for the twins.  27 minutes, 2 kids, 4 pairs of shoes.

Admittedly, I’d brought my daughter yesterday…just to spread the chaos.

I digress.

I’ve been looking at anti-inflammatory properties of food.  I get frustrated each and every time I do this, so I’m not exactly sure why I continue to torture myself in this regard.  I like the articles I find…I do. What I NEED to conform to the OCD of my brain, is that if you’re going to tell me to eat something because it is oh-so-very good for me…tell me how friggin’ MUCH…okay??

Anyhooooo…a tangent to my madness is that I came across a few articles defining “dietary nicotine”.

Yup. There are micrograms of nicotine in some of the veggies out there that we consume.  It can even show up in your urine.  Stellar.

ANYHOOOOOOO…if you look at the little wee listing I found…do you see it?  The foods?  Do you see the correlation??

Pfffffffbbbbbttttttt. For those “old school” chronics, it’ s probably oh-so-very obvious.  Y’know, like me. *shifty eyes*

No.  Just kidding.  I’m not so well versed in smoking tomatoes.  *SNORT*!! KIDDING!

The correlation, for those that are wondering what I’m on (which was a mocha-vodka-valium-latte to go…)…is that there are foods listed on this wee lil’ chart that are members of the NIGHTSHADES.  (Oh, and it would take eating almost 90kgs of tomatoes to effect your body like passive smoking would.  Puttin’ it out there.)

Important? Why, yes…yes, it is.  There has been a correlation between inflammation and the consumption of foods from the nightshades.  Specifically, potatoes (omfg, NO!), tomatoes (ewww…), peppers (blech) and eggplant (yuck).  Also, paprika (Seriously? I don’t use it, but, seriously?!?!)

I really like this article for it’s simplicity in describing the issue, and also it’s listing of the “obvious” nightshades, but also of other  foods containing “solanine”…

Solanine, for those also unfamiliar, can be found on Wikipedia and defined as follows:

Solanine is a glycoalkaloid poison found in species of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), such as the potato (Solanum tuberosum). It can occur naturally in any part of the plant, including the leaves, fruit and tubers. Solanine has fungicidal and pesticidal properties, and it is one of the plant’s natural defences. Solanine was first isolated in 1820 by Desfosses from the berries of the European black nightshade (Solanum nigrum), after which it was named.

Solanine and nictotine and…well…sounds like there’s a song in there somewhere…

I’m curious to know, then…how many people have tried eliminating the nightshades and found it to be successful?  I have a friend who had previously indicated success on her end of things…but…to…eliminate…potatoes??


Interestingly enough…it is also indicated from my Googling around (uh…ya…) that “peppers” also includes such things as capsacin…often found in topical pain relievers.  The very SAME topical pain reliever I’d tried late last fall and thought for sure that there was a bloody inferno under my skin… (o.O) …TOTAL reaction on my end…horrible.  I thought my skin was going to melt OFF my body and I would start oozing some sort of freaky shit.

No, I think there’ll be no nightshades in Spoonieville…sweet potato fries all ’round! :o)

    Yes, I think this will just prove to my husband, beyond all doubts (like he actually had any) that tomatoes are evil. In fact, he believes they were the fruit that Eve tempted Adam with. Since they are, you know, fruit.

    Amusingly enough, in the novels I’m currently reading, tomatoes were the carrier of the Angel virus that killed 1/3 of humans worldwide. Present day humans (50 years later) turn pale and back away at the sight of tomatoes. *grin*

    Where the heck did you get that awesome photo?

    Every vegetable on that list is rarely seen in our house. R hates cauliflower; overloaded with tomatoes in his youth so avoids them if he can, peppers give us upset tummies, and potatoes don’t belong in our “reduce the carbs” plan. Tomatoes, if any, are either eaten on take out hamburgers, or in the form of pasta sauce and ketchup. Strangely enough, I don’t find these foods all that difficult to avoid (at least, according to my grocery list).

    In some people, these foods exacerbate joint pain (arthritis??) – and this, I did NOT know until R’s brother mentioned it to me about 5 years ago, and only at that point did I notice.

    It’s amazing how much food affects our well being.
